Indoor Athletics Event Results
The inaugural Leinster Schools indoor athletics event were held in the fabulous new indoor athletics arena in Abbotstown.
The event was open to 1st and 2nd years only.
800 athletes attended the event, from 35 schools, from across the provence of Leinster.
We came away with one individual bronze medal in the 60m sprint, won by Kate O'Connell from class Williams and three relay bronzes, two team bronzes won by two of our 2nd year teams and one bronze by one of our 1st year relay teams.
Many opportunities to develop junior cycle key skills were afforded at the event for our students today, such as managing myself and communication. An example of this was shown in the following;
One set of the bronze medals won by our 2nd years, as part of the novel relay 'mixed team of 3 boys and 3 girls from any school'. Three of our 2nd year students organised themselves onto a successful squad of 2 boys from Castlecomer CC and 1 boy from Castleknock Community College, taking the bronze medal. This involved confidence and ability to negotiate this arrangement, which the girls showed they had.
One of the girl's very proud mum was there to witness the race and she was especially thrilled with this unique achievement.
Very tired but happy students returned to their afternoon classes after the event.
A huge thanks to Carol who helped manage the team throughout the event and to three 5th years, Alice Buggy, Orlaith Meehan and Eva Merrigan, who are now expert time-keepers and recorders from the experience they had at the finish-line.
