Wellbeing Race

Phoenix Park September 2017

We had our first outing of the athletics programme on Thursday 28th September with the inaugural Dublin Cross Country Championships in the Phoenix Park. The event was open to 1st and 2nd years only.

From the school’s perspective, the event was promoted as a wellbeing race, to provide a more inclusive opportunity for all students in such a healthy activity. To achieve this, it was decided that an in-school challenge would run within the official race, to decide the ‘fittest class’ and the ‘most motivated class’ for Mount Sackville students in 1st and 2nd year. Our TY students helped with the challenge, by recording our student’s placings, at the finish line, alongside the official recordings of the race.

The idea was a big success based on the numbers of 1st and 2nd years who came along on the day and participated, with an estimated 80% - 90% of 1st and 2nd years partaking in the event.

Officially, our 1st years won both the individual and team event and our 2nd years came close to victory, but no medal haul on this occasion.

In our in-house challenge, the results were as follows;

1st years

Fittest Class Most Motivated Class

Maguire Walton

2nd years

Fittest Class Most Motivated Class

Lynn McLoughlin

Our volunteer TY’s were invaluable, in the help they provided with the ‘walking bus’ to the event in the park, of the younger members of our school community, as well as managing them throughout the activity. They were assisted by some of the 1st and 2nd year class prefects from 6th year, who organised a small window of time in their busy day, to support this worthy event. Lots of skills learned and a very enjoyable time had by all.

A big thanks to all involved and to all the staff and management for supporting and enabling the event to take place.

The Students' Experience:

On Thursday the 22nd of September eager 1st and 2nd years participated in what was being promoted a wellbeing event in the Phoenix Park. The excitement built as the athletes gathered in the gym hall for registration. Over 150 students took part in this great day out. Sophie Quinn led from the beginning taking 1st place in the minor girls race. To add to this success the minor girls team won gold. The second years faced a competitive field and didn't pick up any medals but despite this still did themselves proud. Additional prizes were distributed to the fittest class and the most motivated class. A great day was had by all and wouldn't have been able to happen without the help of Ms Corrigan and the fourth years.
