January 2014

Basketball has kicked off at great intensity. Our teams have performed brilliantly so far and will continue.
Our first year As have put in great work to get themselves on a winning streak resulting in a semi-final. Also the B team won two out of three matches, but must wait for other matches to be played before any more fixtures can be updated.

Our Junior teams have both got themselves into a decider match against Drogheda on the 21st. They have put in great efforts.

Our Cadette teams have done exceptionally well. The Cadette A team have got themselves a place in the semi-finals. The Cadette B team unfortunately lost their quarter final but they put in a tremendous performance all year.

Our Senior team have had a tough season so far, playing in the Premier Division but have managed to find themselves in the semi-final on Monday the 20th of January. The Senior Bs have also shown great determination and also have qualified for the semi-final!

Best of luck to all teams!

Monday 21st January 2013

The Cadette As had a terrific win in their final vs. Maryfield on Monday 21st in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght! This outstanding team started off this tight final brilliantly with the opening basket coming from Anne-Marie Troy in the very first minute! The girls defence was unbelievable throughout the match but I think, as all spectators would agree, their shots on basket were incredible! Our very own Ireland player, Laura Fortune, got some amazing outside shots including one 3 pointer in the third quarter.

Throughout the first quarter the Sackville girls dominated with strong defence from Aoibhinn Lynch and Ciara Sweeney. The girls battled hard for every ball and Aoife Parkes got a lovely free throw in the fourth minute. Two more baskets from Anne-Marie and Laura gave the girls a nice 2 point lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the girls suffered from some unfortunate fouls giving the tough opponent two baskets from free shots. This knocked the girls’ confidence only slightly and after wise words from Ms Gibbons on a time out the girls finished the quarter strong with only 2 points to catch up on.

In the third quarter the girls really got into their stride as they made a marvellous come back. Katie Nyhan was strong in defence alongside Catherine Leahy who kept the Maryfield girls out allowing only 2 baskets in this 8 minute quarter. Laura really showed her skill with two outside shots. The girls went into the final quarter with a tight 1 point lead over the Marino rivals.

The fourth quarter was when the girls really began to shine and enjoy the game with outstanding team work and passing by all! Aoife Parkes made three great attempts on basket with two well deserved and on target! Even though the legs were tiring rebounds were not an issue to these girls when many a time they outstretched or out jumped their opposition with eagerness for the ball! Anne-Marie really kept her cool when with only 7 seconds to go scored a brilliant free shot under the pressure of the boisterous opposing fans.

Overall every one of these girls truly showed their extreme talent in this nail bighting final and had the whole of the crowd on their feet throughout! Also, a special mention for our very own captain, Laura, who won Most Valuable Player for this outstanding final. This was not only an amazing day for Basketball in Mount Sackville but also for the whole school!  Congratulations girls, you were truly inspirational and you did us proud!

15th January 2013

The Senior A Basketball team suffered a very unlucky defeat in their semi-final on Tuesday versus Skerries. Ms Fallon’s strong Division 1 team were very unfortunate not to continue on to further success next week in the National Basketball Arena against their rivals Greenhills, but hope to bounce back in the near future.

This team, made up of 5th and 6th Years, played their hearts out on Tuesday losing by 6 points. This final margin does not do justice to how tight the game really was and how close this skilful team came to returning victorious! Throughout the 4 quarters all 5 on the court gave it their all, with great baskets coming from strong ball carrier Amy Farrell and experienced Niamh Parkes. Defence was one of the best parts of their game, both today and throughout the year, with aggressive and brave backs Shauna McGinley and Aoife Jordan. Amy Doyle also had some brilliant shots, scoring three great lay-ups!

The first and second quarter went as planned with the girls coming out on top at each interval. However as the legs grew tired and the concentration faded the third quarter brought a shock to all on field as well as to the encouraging side line! Luckily, after wise words from Ms Fallon, five girls returned again determined to turn things around! Defence kicked in again with Aoibhinn Dowdall and Arianne Delaney stepping up to the mark quickly, however this was not enough and the team became unlucky with their shots and fouls allowing Skerries to pip them at the post with a disappointing 18-24 finishing score!

Although not everyone could be played, it is fair to say that any one of those on the bench were just as good as those who were on the court and would have done their very best and might have been able to turn things around! They showed amazing support for those girls on the court throughout the match but also before and after. They were just as important as those who played!

Overall this Senior A team did the school proud with how they performed and no one is disappointed in them. They should hold their heads high. The younger teams are often coached by these girls and see them as role models!

Hard luck girls, but you did us proud!
