Extra Curricular Activities

Mount Sackville offers a wide range of cultural and leisure activities. These include:

Fifth Year Students have an opportunity to go abroad on educational tours.

Science Club

The science club was originally set up for the 1st year students as an introduction to the world of science.  The students enjoy doing many experiments, such as:  dissection of a heart, King Kong’s hand and making a compass to name but a few.

The science club usually takes place during lunchtime on Friday.  It is run by 6th year science students and supervised by a science teacher.  It provides the students with a chance to experiment and also to make new friends.

Debating

Mount Sackville Secondary School has its own debating society. Established in September 2002, the Mount Sackville Debating Society provides all students from First to Sixth Year the opportunity to engage in rhetorical excess.

A committee of four students from Fifth Year, in conjunction with various members of staff, organise lunchtime debating for all years. The following events occur:

First Year Debating – This begins in late January and is an introductory programme that provides students with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of debating. This is a fun, non-competitive introduction to the whacky world of rhetoric.

Junior Debating Competition -  This begins in November and is open to Second and Third Years. No previous experience is required to participate (this is especially important as it’s never too late to start!). Each year group debate until Second and Third Year champions are crowned. The two winning teams then meet for the Grand Final and the overall title of Junior Debating Champions.

Senior Debating Competition – This begins in October and is open to all students from T.Y., Fifth and Sixth Year. All are welcome to take part – even those who have never debated before – and the eventual outcome of the competition is the crowning of the Senior Debating Champions.

Mount Sackville Debating Society also enters speakers in various inter-school debating competitions. In recent years we have entered teams, who have achieved considerable success, in competitions such as:

The Mount Sackville Debating Society provides students not only with the opportunity to take part in an enjoyable activity, but also to learn to speak in public with confidence – an increasingly important life skill, and one that is acknowledged as such by employers.
Long may the society and its members thrive!

Charity work in Mount Sackville

Students in Mount Sackville often give generously to fundraising efforts for charities such as Goal, Respect, St. Vincent De Paul (SVDP), Focus on Romania (FOR), RehabCare Campaign and the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) to name but a few.

The fundraising activities have included cake sales, raffles, tables quizzes, dinner dances, sponsored walks, and fashion shows.  The girls are always enthusiastic and generous.
