Emma McDonnell 1st Year Class: Nightingale - Induction

My First Year Induction My transition from post-primary school to secondary school was easy and enjoyable, and that’s all down to Mount Sackville. Joining secondary school, I, like any other student was nervous and anxious to start because I didn’t know anyone. This school offers a great induction service for the new girls starting here. Our induction started with 2 days of fun games and activities where we had a great chance to meet new people and teachers. We then had 1 week of hockey camp where we had the opportunity to make friends with the girls in our year while exercising. I realised from talking to my friends who went on to other secondary schools, they didn’t have an induction, and whilst we were having fun and playing games, they had been launched straight into classes and had to find their own way around the school. The induction really is a privilege 1st years were lucky to have. Other years have been really nice and welcoming towards us and have held many events to introduce us to the school. On the last day of our induction, we were taken to a welcoming family mass and then outside where we planted flower bulbs in the soil to symbolise how much we will grow and flourish throughout our time here, in Mount Sackville. 6th years organised a quiz where there were lots of prizes to be won and all of the money raised went to the Laura Lynn foundation. Our Dean, with the help of a few teachers and some older girls, prepared a Halloween Party where we played games and watched a movie, and all money raised was donated to the ‘Paint it Pink’ for breast cancer charity. We all filled shoeboxes with gifts and sent them around the world to disadvantaged children for Christmas. We have a buddy system where we are paired with a 4th year and take part in activities such as quizzes and the tying of friendship braids. The school does a really good job at welcoming us, and makes us feel loved and cared for. The staff and senior pupils have welcomed us with open arms to the school and have made sure know where we are going and when. I believe the school has exceeded expectations, and we are very lucky to attend such a lovely school!
