JUNIOR CYCLE
Students study a Modern European language at Junior cycle level. They develop skills such as reading, writing, listening and speaking skills on various everyday topics. At the end of the three years students will be able to understand and use familiar basic phrases.
In 2nd year all students complete a Classroom Based Assessment (CBA). This is an oral assessment based on their learning to date.
The Junior Cycle exam (2 hours long) is composed of:
- Aural exam (40%)
- Written exam (60%)
The final exam is a common paper exam set by the SEC and will be done at the end of 3rd year, in June.
TRANSITION YEAR
As part of the Transition year course, students continue with their Modern European Language. Students will continue to develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students are supported to complete exchanges and/or school language trips.
SENIOR CYCLE
In Senior cycle, students are prepared for their Leaving Certificate exam. Students continue to develop each of the 4 key skills for language learning. Students study topics such as education, lifestyle of young people, sport, technology, travel and current affairs.
The leaving certificate exam is composed of the following elements:
- Oral exam (25%): General Conversation and Document (optional)
- Aural exam (20%)
- Written exam (55%)
Students have the opportunity to complete the exam at either Higher Level or Ordinary Level. The oral exams typically take place at Easter. The final exam is set by the SEC and completed in June of 6th year.
