TY science is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop an informed opinion about the importance of science as a subject and how it affects their lives, locally and globally, in the context of education, the environment, the economy and their future careers and life choices, by engaging students in a broad range of science related events and activities.

This is achieved through the provision of an inquiry-learning based course that focuses on developing understanding of core content, alongside practical problem-solving skills, that real scientists need and use.

The TY science course will attempt to capture the following;

  • Review fundamental science conceptscovered in junior cycle science like energy, matter, electromagnetism, genetics, climatology etc.
  • Broadening and deepening students understanding of familiar science concepts and introducing and developing some new challenging concepts, in different contexts.
  • Exploringcurrent science issues in the media.
  • Developing skills necessary for carrying out practical work scientists engage in, such as designing and executing experiments, statistical analysis of findings for reporting and conducting research for project work.
  • Using formative assessment practices, to support summative assessment.
  • Using relevant supporting IT, websites, videos, etc., to improve students understanding and engagement in science.

Time allocation

TY science is allocated 3 classes a week, one single and one double class.

Sample topics covered are;

· How to write up a scientific investigation

· Chemical reactions

· Plastics, recycling solutions

· Energy as a concept across the sciences

· Developing scientific inquiry

· Research, how do you do it?

· Scientific reporting

Some projects ideas;

· Mystery boxes

· Get a half-life, radioactivity

· Egg drop

· Paper planes


Formative assessmentis ongoing in the classroom through suitable strategies used that supports and improves students’ learning and deepens understanding of the core concepts of science.

Regular checking of students learning, in the form of identified assignments at the start of the school year, related to content and skills covered, spaced throughout the school year and forming a profile of achievement with individual formative feedback.

One summative assessmentin science, at the end of the school year, during school summer exams.

Literacy and numeracy

A focus on literacy and numeracythroughout the teaching, learning, assessment and reporting of achievement in science by students will happen the use of suitable strategies like the use of keywords/terms and identifying learning intentions in class, verbal discussions and developing a culture of reflective learning by students and teachers.
