Wellbeing

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is a big part of what we do in Mount Sackville.

We are working to have choir and singing for all of our students as well as a wonderful PE programme and CSPE and SPHE for the junior girls. The students each have their tutor and a Dean over the year group. We have a wonderful Student Support team comprising of two Guidance Counsellors, our Chaplain and our coordinator of Learning Support who meet weekly to engage with any area of Student wellbeing that is in need of additional care.

Drama is a huge area in school that is growing and becoming an excellent way to build confidence, explore engaging characters and have great fun together. Extra Sports are here in abundance with hockey, tennis, basketball, GAA offered to name but a few.

We are fully aware that our students are amazing young women and we strive to scaffold them on their second level educational journey. We are confident to say that our student's wellbeing is at the heart of all that we do.

WELLBEING IN MOUNT SACKVILLE SECONDARY SCHOOL

The following definition of Wellbeing aims to take account of its multi-dimensional nature (World Health Organisation (WHO), 2001).

Wellbeing is present when a person realises their potential, is resilient in dealing with the normal stresses of their life, takes care of their physical wellbeing and has a sense of purpose, connection and belonging to a wider community. It is a fluid way of being and needs nurturing throughout life.

Mount Sackville strives to achieve this for each of its students from first to sixth year. Wellbeing is fostered through the curriculum across all subject areas in the classroom and in the wider school community through the extra-curricular programme on offer to students. Students are provided with opportunities in music, drama and sport to reach their potential, develop a sense of purpose and as a result connect with others in the school.

Mount Sackville takes a whole school approach to catering for student wellbeing by recognising and putting systems in place in four recommended areas of school life. These are outlined in the diagram below. (Wellbeing Policy Statement and Framework for Practice 2018-2023).

The wellbeing of the student is further supported outside of the classroom environment by a team of professionals: Guidance Counsellor, School Chaplain and Special Educational Needs Staff. A Dean/Tutor system is also in place within the school to help with the many challenges that school life presents for students navigating their way through secondary school.

Every year in Spring, Mount Sackville holds a Wellbeing Week to bring into focus the importance of this issue across the school community. During the week students are encouraged to engage in activities which support their physical, emotional and mental health.

Mount Sackville deems this area of education of paramount importance in the holistic development of every single student in our school.
